Laila Lalami was born and raised in Rabat, Morocco.
She studied linguistics at Universite Mohammed V, University College London, and the University of Southern California.
Her essays and book reviews have appeared in Al Bayane, The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Times, The Oregonian, The Washington Post, The Nation, and elsewhere.
Lalami's debut book of fiction, Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits, was published in the fall of 2005 and has since been translated into five languages. It was also a finalist for the Oregon Book Awards and the Caine Prize in African Writing.
Lalami is the recipient of an Oregon Literary Arts grant and a Fulbright Fellowship.
