Laila Lalami
Sara Corwin
Laila Lalami was born and raised in Rabat, Morocco.

She studied linguistics at Universite Mohammed V, University College London, and the University of Southern California.

Her essays and book reviews have appeared in Al Bayane, The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Times, The Oregonian, The Washington Post, The Nation, and elsewhere.

Lalami's debut book of fiction, Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits, was published in the fall of 2005 and has since been translated into five languages. Her most recent novel, Secret Son, was published in April.

She is the recipient of an Oregon Literary Arts grant, a British Council fellowship, and a Fulbright fellowship. Currently, she is an assistant professor of creative writing at UC Riverside.

She participated in a World Voices conversation called "Inventing the Past," which appeared in PEN America 8: Making Histories.
